My take on shepherds pie.
See below for my comments and review on honest earth creamy mash.
Ingredients
1/2 large onion chopped
1/2 lb ground meat
1/2 cup frozen peas and carrots
1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp Worcester sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
For potatoes
1 pack honest earth creamy mash (review below)
1 cup boiling water
3/4 cup cold water
Salt to taste
Margarine or butter to taste
Cooking instructions
-heat oil in pan
-add chopped onions
-add peas and carrots
-sauté for 2 min
-add ground meat
-add Worcester sauce
-add salt and pepper
-cook until meat is no longer pink
-set aside in dish
Potatoes
-boil 2 cups water
-add 3/4 cup cold water
-add packet of mash potatoes
-add margarine and salt to taste
-mix thoroughly insuring all potatoes are mixed
-set mash potatoes on top of ground meat mixture
At this point you can serve it, or if you like broil the top of the potatoes such that it is crispy and has a nice brown color (this step is recommended but not necessary).
My comments and review
I generally don't like using mash potatoes from a packet, but I was at costco and they were sampling honest earth creamy mash. It tastes excellent, the only ingredients were salt, butter and dehydrated potatoes, so I thought why not give it a try.
They are very good, but I find you definetly need to add more salt and butter/margarine to get the typical savoury flavour of mash potatoes.
I recommend this product, simply because of how easy it allows you to make mash potatoes, which in my opinion, has always been a tedious, messy and cumbersome task deterring me away from making meals such as shepherds pie.
Also, shepherds pie usually has corn in it. This version does not because it makes the meal sweet, which Umar doesn't like. But you can definetly add a layer of cream corn to it.
Next time, I'm thinking of making tw o batches of the meat mixture and freezing one in a freezer bag. That way, I can simply pull it out of the freezer, thaw it and add the mash to the top and throw it into the oven to heat/broil. I'll let you know how that turns out...
